A Week in Review

In my life this week…

This week I made a decision to get myself up earlier so that I could be more consistent with my work out.  I can never seem to find the right time of day to do it.  And it seems that the longer the day goes on, well…you get the picture.  So this meant setting my alarm clock 30 min. earlier than usual.  It’s not perfect but, we’re headed in the right direction.

In our homeschool this week…

My Kindergartner is reading phonics readers from Starfall.com this week.  He absolutely loves them, and I am really pleased that his ability to blend his letters is improving.  My 2nd grader is reading Book #1 of the Boxcar Children.  We have also moved from Mommy writing the narrations to the kiddo writing down his own narrations.  This was initially meet with moans and groans of “Why can’t you just do it, Mommy?” and my steady reply of, “Because it’s important for you to learn how to put your own ideas into writing, so one day when you are a world famous author and collecting your big bucks, you can send some to your Mother who taught you how to write ; )”   I think he did a great job.  I’m super proud.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

If your kindergarten program does not include enough phonics readers, there are a lot of places online where you can get them for free.  I made a reference list here.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

My husband and I travel, training and equipping the church trans-locally.  This was a week that we were on the road 2 out of our 5 school days.

My favorite thing this week was…

I made it to my favorite yarn shop while we were in Philly this week.  I can’t wait to sink my fingers into a new project.

My kiddos favorite thing this week was…

Our two boys got to stay at their grandparents house for two days while my hubby and I were on the road.  Does it get any better than that for a kid?

Things I’m working on…

We just published a free mammals lapbook to go along with “First Animal Encyclopedia.”  I’m working on getting the rest of the lapbooks for this series finalized.  I’m really hoping it can be a blessing to homeschooling families.

I’m cooking…

Tonight is fajitas!  Although I’m still dreaming of the Thai tea that we had at our favorite Philly restaurant just days ago.

I’m grateful for…

I’m so eternally grateful for a strong support system of family that we have around us at this stage of our life/ministry.  Our crazy life would not be possible without the loving support of Grandma, Poppy, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and even Great-Grandma.  Their involvement in our daily lives make life so much better and easier.  It feels good not to have to go it alone.

I rewarded my kids this week by…

Netflix has been a great way to reward the kiddos.  Especially on winter days like today, when all you want to do is curl up with a good movie.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share (silly, serious or both!)…

This was quite hilarious I thought.  After walking out of the family room for a moment, I returned to find my kindergartner had created a message for me on the carpet.  Can you figure out what it says?  Keep scrolling down to find out…

“I want a dog and I will share it with my brother.”  Hope this gave all the moms of boys a good smile.

I also pray your days are filled with love and abundance!

  1. Having a 2nd grader too, I think he did a wonderful job on his written narration! And good going on reading Boxcar Children! My son HATES writing, but he’s doing more and more of it. Currently he likes copying quotes from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. LOL

So, it he getting a dog? LOL

    • Thanks! I love that your son is copying quotes from his fav. book…that is awesome! I know my kiddo likes things that are super silly. For sure, silly=interesting for 2nd grade boys!! Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten a dog yet, although I might eventually crumble. : )

  2. I might have just double posted….if so, sorry! Anyway, I just visited from collage Friday. Would you believe that I am also a Kirsten Joy? Crazy, huh?

Thanks for the links to the phonics readers. My K’er is just getting past needing these quite as much (he has successfully completed a few Dr. Suess books now). But I have two more younger ones who will hit this stage in future years…and it’s always a challenge to keep them in reading material as beginners.

    • That is so great! I don’t meet many people with our name! I’m so glad the phonics readers were useful for you. That’s especially awesome your Kindergartner is reading Dr. Seuss. LOVE the bright beginner books : )
